Farmall A - Front Wheel Bearings

I am trying to replace the front wheel bearings on my Farmall A. I purchased kits from Steiner. As I am taking the old set off; there is a metal piece behind the inner bearing that appears to have had felt or leather washers (badly deteriorated and unrecognizable) sandwiched in between two metal rings. The new set has two felt washers with what looks like a sheet metal cup. I am not sure if I am missing a part. I don't see the purpose of the cup. I don't know about using the old part. I can probably straighten the spots where it got bent during removal; however I don't know how to get the felt washers onto it without damaging them. Also there was a metal ring in it that broke apart. If I use the sheet metal cup in the configuration that it appears to go, then the back of the inner bearing would be against the felt washer; whereas on the old one it was against the metal retainer that held the felt or leather washers. Any help would be appreciated.

Different types of dust shields have been available hard to tell just where yours came from some are just a piece of felt

From what I gather from your post is that you may have the same parts that are used on the Super A front wheels. (I'm trying to include a picture which is a fragment of one of the pages on the CaseIH web site.)
The dust deflector (17) should be on the knuckle. Then the felt washer (16) is placed, followed by the seal (15). The seal is of an odd design; it is pressed on the shaft (before the inner bearing cone)and the rubber lips are on the outside (rather than on the inside for "normal" oil seals).
The "cup" you are talking about is probably the thin wear ring which is pressed into the inside end of the wheel hub. The lips of the seal ride on this wear ring.
Hope this helps; e-mail is open.

Hendrik, thanks for the reply. The Steiner kit did not come with the wheel seal. I see that there are others available in the same price range that include the seal. I was told by a bearing guy to use the old one, which was damaged upon removal and the seal material was shot anyway. I did a lot of internet research with no success. Your diagram gave me the part number, which allowed me to locate and order two.

orion1,
Glad you replied and happy to hear it helped you some.
Got mine from Bermuda Ken (a forum member and authoritative author of Farmall books) at Carter and Gruenewald, now Johnson Tractor in Iowa.
