Well, Now I Am Upset...

Broke the SuperM in half about 2 weeks ago, ordered a ring gear, and a complete clutch kit for it. Everything FINALLY got here, and we threw it all back together the other day. Tried starting it tonight, won't turn over? Thought maybe bad ground, or even a starter issue, but nope! The engine is locked..... It turns about 1/3rd of a turn, and hits something.........

I assume this means that the pressure plate is hitting the oil pump? Not sure what else is in there that could be causing trouble? I contacted the company I got the stuff from, we'll see what they have to say, but I am flat out ------ that I have wasted all this time putting it back together....

I had the exact same thing happen on my super m. The adjustment stud was longer on one of the pressure plate fingers. I took a grinder to them and ground the casting numbers inside the bell housing where it was hitting and it was cured. Wasn't much but just enough to lock it. Identical to yours 1/3 of a turn and it was hitting

were the flywheel bolts replaced? longer bolts could lock it.
did you try to turn it with the plugs out? oil or junk could lock it.
have you put the belly pump (if equipped) back in? if so taking it out will let you look at it.
Is the weird shaft coupler together correctly (real pain) it could be an issue.
A stuck valve could be an issue. Jim

Interesting.... I am going to split the tractor again and have a look. I should have compared the new pressure plate to the old one before I stuck it in, but didn't really think about it. Lesson learned I suppose! Thanks for the advice, i'll report back what I find. Bryce

Flywheel bolts were replaced with exact bolts.

Engine is a good, strong running engine, so it isn't the problem.

I suspect as mention the pressure plate is slightly different and hitting something.... I will break it in half again and see whats what.

If you have a belly hydraulic pump, the pressure plate intended for a live pump tractor will not work. You'll grind a hole in the belly pump housing if you try and use the wrong plate.

If this is your problem, don't do a cob-job and grind on the wrong parts. Get the right pressure plate. Both styles are still available aftermarket. Parts seller should have known the difference.

Bryce, try dropping the belly pump housing down to see if it turns over then before you actually split it. Should be able to see what is hanging up from the bottom side.

Had the same thing happen a few years ago on a Super M. The fingers on the clutch hit the belly pump housing. I tried 3 different pressure plates with the same results. I think we finally got a reman plate from another supplier (the others came from Case) and solved the issue. Tractor was fine as long as the belly pump was not installed.
