52 SC with crunch sound

Tractor engine and gears run fine. But, lately there has developed a "crunch" sound that appears to be coming from the transmission or axle area. More pronounced on the right hand side. Weights on rear wheels are secure. "Crunch" sounds lasts only a second and seem to occur with each revolution of the rear wheel. Any suggestions of where to start looking for the source?

The bolts that go from the cast center to the rim are probably the culprit
I would remove the nuts one at a time then lube the threads good and tighten. Also the nuts on the clamp assy on the axle remove and lube.

I will add that simply putting a wrench on the bolts and nuts to check for tightness doesn't always tell the whole story. If the nuts are rusty, they might seem to be tight, but they are not.

I had a rhythmic crunch noise coming from the right side of my MD. When I removed the rear wheel casting from the axle I found large chunks of flaked metal that were inside the casting of the hub. Remove your axle wedge and see if you have stuff in there falling around.

The four bolts holding the wheel onto the axle all seemed to be tight, even with a cheater pipe on a breaker bar. But, I took them out, one by one, cleaned all the threads, shot Blaster down the hole several times, greased the bolt & reinstalled. Torqued to 140ft-lbs. And, by golly, the "scrunch" sound disappeared. Thanks, everyone for the help.

Last summer we had a noise and dad swore the lug bolts were tight. They were. Rusted tight did not move. Broke one after heat. Like you our sound was gone.
