H steering box..............

Hi guys; another question; working on my steering. I did order the replacement u-joint assembly for the shaft; my question is this ; there is also about 1/2 turn of "Play" in the shaft where it goes into the steering gear box( I took the front hood off to see it); so is there any adjustment on this box to take out the play? Or just live with it? Thanks.

the housing has a 4-bolt plate at the top where the shaft comes in; there? then goes down into front wheels; what ball-bearing ?

Sorry to say, there is no adjustment. I had the similar free play, finally ordered a new shaft and worm gear from this site. Fixed it. Be aware, you need lube in there, and you may have to pull in new seals to seal up the gear box and retain lube.

Well there is no adjustment for the worn gears. However, I did have the nut on the front end of the shaft come loose one time which worsened the problem.

The bearing is a heavy duty Deep Groove bearing. Several bearings interchange withit, but the only one to choose is the same number as the original. It is common and available at Motion Industries, or Kamman Bearing. If there is any play in that ball bearing, it should be replaced. John Deere Corn Head grease will stay in the housing. Jim

There are a couple things you can do without spending 2/3 the value of the tractor on new gears.

First off if sector gear is loose on the shaft, tighten it down. Might need a beer can shim to get it tight enough.

Second off you can replace the bushings for the vertical shaft in the steering post and take some of the slop out there.

Third off you can grind about .030" off one side of that front bearing's outer diameter, and shim it over to the (driver's) left to shove the worm gear further into the sector gear. A piece of cheap hose clamp is about .030" and makes a perfect shim.

Are these built the same as an M? The sector gear in an M has teeth 360 degrees all the way around, but only uses about 150 degrees. I simply pulled the sector gear out of my M and turned it 180 degrees so there were new, unused teeth against the worm gear. That doesn't allow for wear in the worm gear, but it helped a lot on my M.

Previous post about steering joint indicates his H doesn't have a full circle gear unless replaced at on time. Most if not all M tractors didn't come with a full circle gear also.

Uh, that's okay unless it puts the worm so tight into the sector that it binds up when you turn sharp to the left or right..... it puts the worm too
tightly into the less worn area of the sector. Then the wheel hangs up, so be aware this could happen.

thanks for your help- I will post what I find in a few days as I get to that part of the tractor! Thanks again!
