986 IH Transmission problems

I have a 986 IH tractor and the park prawl and shaft have been giving me trouble. The shaft has fallen down inside the transmission, and the tractor is locked in park! I think I need to remove the top of the transmission.

Does anyone have any ideas?
How do you remove the top plate?

Well normally After you remove the floor plat in the cab and you get everything out of the way you would first block the park loc up about 3/4 of and inch and i use a 1/2 inch NUT as they are 3/4 of and inch as a block then you unbolt the top cover and you are SUPPOSE to have the tools to hold the rev shifter shaft in place once you get the cover up a little to slide it uin place . Or you can also pull the side cover off the left side behind the left step to gain access to the rev shifting fork. Now If the hyd . fluid is at the proper level you will loose about 1 gallon when you pull that cover or you can just drain the rear end . it may take two sharp stiff bladed putty knifes to drive in under the top cover to get the gskt to break loose then ya just lift up and bring everything up and out . Now if i am reading this correctly you are sayen that the shaft has dropped and the park pawl is engaged . Huston you have a problem . Now about three years ago i ran into a 1086 that the pin that held the park pawl or i should say the pivot pin worked out to the rear and would not allow the top cover to up no more then and inch if that . This job was just to replace a couple rollers and the detent spring and hour and a half job that turned into a ten hour job . On that one if your did the same thing what i did with a lot of trial and error i made a long thin tapered wedge out of a 5/8th rod with several bends to get behind the pin and force it back into the bracket enough so that i could lift the cover off . I went in under the cab on the left side and got my barn yard engineered tool in and with the help of a 3 pound hammer i drove the homemade wedge between the pin and the wall of the transmission case . I am telling ya it was a major battle . Once the pin was drove in far enough the cover lifted off like normal . to solve the falling out pin a good bevel around the mounting point of the pin and some 7018 i layed in a good hot fillet weld . SOOOOOO good luck on yours .

Thanks for the info, mine has the auxiliary fuel tank on it as well, so I will have to take that off as well. I will give it a shot here shortly!

So I managed to get it apart and recover the park prawl and spring from the bottom. Is there any tricks to putting the cover back on with the linkage and such?
