Farmall 450 Plowing Plow Size

What is the appropriate size plow for a Farmall 450? It obviously depends on soil type, and we have a pretty heavy/dense clay on my land here in Iowa. I know it would pull a 2 bottom but am having a hard time finding one. Anyone know where to get a pull type 2 bottom or if you think it could pull a 3 bottom?

If a 450 can't pull 3 bottoms in most soils, something is wrong with it.
Assuming the plow is properly adjusted and running at normal depths.

They some times have a 2x16's @ almost always have a 3 x 14's in the marketplace here in YT website, click on photo ads, and then implements.

we always pulled 3-14's up and down clay hills. Uncle had 3-16' behind his. All Oliver plows in that era in our country.
The saying was that Oliver plows always pulled easier in all conditions and it was a trend that everybody got on board with.
Still got a 3-14 Oliver sitting the pasture that was married to an M Farmall for a long time.

I run a 3-16 fasthitch plow on my 400D.I can usually pull it in 3rd direct, rarely have to TA it or drop to 2nd.

well never had the chance to plow in iowa but over here in the hills of N/E Ohio in our ground that can vary from yellow clay to some black muck in the bottoms to sand seams and Rocks LOTS of ROCKS i pulled 4x14 540 semi mounts , corn ground in the hills third gear with my 450D in heavy sod and dryer then a popcorn fart second gear .

Yeah, 3-16's are probably best. When my cousin got a brand new 400 with 13-38 rear tires they sold him a 4-14 trailer plow with it......Well, in most areas with our sandy loam soils it went okay in 3rd, using TA occasionally, but on the clay hills he had to "cheat up" all the time to get up the hills in 2nd and TA and spinning the land wheel with 3 wheel weights on it...and riding the left brake a little too.....front wheels just barely touching the ground....
I will say the new 400 looked and sounded pretty impressive pulling that 4-14's plow...it was a real "boss rig" in those days. If there hadn't been those clay hills it would have been great!

I'm with Glenn F. on this one. We've got a 400 that's putting out about 60HP on the dyno and it has all it wants pulling 3-14's around here in 2nd gear. It'll roar right along, but no way it would pull that plow in 3rd.

You guys who can roll right along in 3rd with a 4-bottom anything must be plowing your kids' sandbox.

Run a 3-16 fasrhitch on a 400 gas with MW mods can do 3rd direct sometimes. Most times 3rd TA. Heavy black soils. Usually gear back to 2nd and run direct.
