350 oil filter canister

Copper ring is original. VW had a copper. Crush ring for their oil plugs. Go to your local well stocked NAPA or such with the bolt and get some thick nylon washers that are made just for this purpose. Pick up a couple. I have a 300U with the same set up.
 
Other than a bad seal ring over tightening can deform the canister bolt hole. Sign of being deformed is canister being sunk in at bolt hole instead of protruding.
 
That's what I'm afraid may have happened after the copper ring was lost at the last oil change. It was leaking slightly then one of the boys said it was leaking really bad - I think he attempted to fix the slight leak by tightening the bolt and deforming the upper lip. I'll check it out when I take it apart tonight.

I have straightened out many oil and fuel filter canisters over the years. A little ingenuity with a properly sized rod , pipe or bolt, what ever to push it back up to protrude and then smoothing it out with file or whatever to get a nice flat smooth surface.
