Gas Tank Insulation

Hey guys! 656 I'm working on has insulation between gas tank and heat shield where the tank is close to the motor/exhaust. Nice have been in it and it's in pretty bad shape. Do you guys replace it with anything specific, or just leave it out all together? Neither of the 606's I've had apart have this.

This is just a idea, but that insulation that you buy, in a can, kind of a yellow color, it really expands and sticks like crasy, and paint it when done !!

Original is probably asbestos. Don't know if that is still available. I think if it were mine I would try to find something similar.

Are you talking the spray foam insulation like you can get at Home Depot or WalMart? That stuff won't hold up against heat.

There are special insulations you can get for cars/trucks that goes against the firewall. If you have a vehicle salvage yard near you, you might be able to find a newer vehicle, tear up the carpet and then remove enough insulation to do the job.

Also, I have (SOMEwhere!) a small left-over roll of insulation that is fiberglass, but on a heavy foil-type backing. Something like that would be ideal. You could always go to your local auto parts store and ask them about it.

You could also skip the insulation, but if you ever have an unexpected leak in the gas tank or even an accidental spill while filling, that little bit of insulation could make the difference between an engine fire or not.

There is a 2 part body filler foam that we use that goes in cars, trucks and big trucks that we use. Its made by SEM and I'm almost positive its chemical resistant. Works great but kinda pricey. You can get it at any NAPA store but may have to order it.
