Pre cleaner Farmall A

Greetings All,
Can someone enlighten me about precleaners?
My A will be used mostly for mowing. Did they come with the precleaner as an option or did they even come on A's? I see them on ebay listed as fitting an A. Do you put anything in the little glass jar that looks like a mason jar? How does it work?
Thanks in advance....

Pre-cleaner was an aftermarket/option type of thing. Used when you where going to use the tractor in real dusty conditions. As for what you put in the jar well you put a toy JD tractor in it so you can say your hauling a JD around since it cannot haul it self LOL. And yes it is in fact a mason jar

The pre cleaners are a very good idea. If you can get one, go for it. They work more or less on the centrifuge theory. Incoming air is swirled and the dust falls out to be collected in the jar.

You can get new ones for 55 make sure they are for an A The C,H and M also used them but different sizes on the air claener tube

Thanks will do. I think the ones I looked at are repros. They list a 1 and 3/8 inch pipe diameter and 1 and 3/4. I will measure mine.

The incoming air is swirled around, by the inlet louvres on the first part. That swirl carries over to the area above the jar, where in the center of the swirl, things slow down and the debris drops into the jar. Works well. Want to see the principle in action? Put a 5 gallon bucket half full of water, toss in some mud, and give it a good strong swirl to get the water swirling around and around. Wait. Wait to see the mud and dirt collect in the center of the swirl, and drop out. Same principle.
