Got the head off the 656!

Got the head pulled tonight. Will get it to the shop tomorrow or Monday so they can check flatness, check for cracks and do a valve job. Cylinders 3 through 6 had 150-155psi compression and no oil or antifreeze contamination that I can see. I don't see any reason to tear down further...What do you think?

looks like it has some hours on it judging by the carbon ridges on the liners. think you were right on the head gasket being smoked.

Those pictures are not the best. No idea when the motor was open
last...Sleeves do have a cross hatch pattern to them and compression
was very good on the other 4 cylinders.

What's the best way to clean off the block to prep for reassembly, and
possibly clean out some of that carbon?

Thanks!

i use 3M brand rolock rubber disks, the green colored ones. they work well and will not take any metal off the surface. then follow up with a scotch brite pad any hard to get spots. clean with alcohol and ready to go. If you plan on working on alot of engines i would invest in a ridge reamer, it makes short work of the carbon ridges.

with good compression like that , all it may need is a good clean up and gasket, other than a check for head warpage. would need to pull valves and have a look at seats. machinist will know.

I'd take the extra step, pull oil pan off, and pop the rods and pistons out.
I've seen these break pistons, I've seen carbon build up bad in behind the rings that would probably create some issues.
Its only another ten hours work that can go a long way.

Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like things are getting loose. I would pull the pistons and measure them and the sleeve bores. Might be time for new pistons and sleeves since your already doing the head.

The top of the sleeves do not look that good to me, I would be concerned with another gasket blowing.

Had some time this morning to do some cleaning, and measuring. Also broke out the ridge reamer I had from my grandpa. Ridge was actually pretty minimal...I think the pictures I initially gave you were just too crappy! Have not pulled the pan yet (I will) but so far, don't really think I need to go any farther. Do you agree based off these measurements?

Sleeve ID New: 3.5603 to 3.5628
Replace if at/over: 3.5703
Replace if taper over: .008

Measurement are given perpendicular and parallel to block for each cylinders.
1 - 3.5640, 3.5628
2 - 3.5646, 3.5638
3 - 3.5631, 3.5622
4 - 3.5635, 3.5622
5 - 3.5632, 3.5620
6 - 3.5640, 3.5623
Those measurements were from the top, but I measured at the bottom as well.

why did you remove the ridge??? shouldnt have did that. that engine looks in good shape from what i can see and im sure only needs a gasket and checking.

The sleeve you reamed the ridge on looks a bit higher than the ones next to it on each side. Might be the picture Other wise clean it up and new gasket.
