Input shaft

I have my input shaft removed where the sliding gears are on. I want to replace the bearing for the front towards the clutch and the the one at the rear towards the differential but I can not see any part numbers on either can someone please give me some info on part numbers?

For the best results take the old bearings along to the bearing sdtore to avoid ny mixups due to new numbers ect

Trent, the bearings in the trans and rear are all standard metric bearings. Measure with calipers and convert to MM.

For the input shaft assembly (first thing in trans, spins in its own housing)the front bearing (clutch side) is a 208wg and the back one is a 309W. These numbers are for Timken (Fafnir). "208" and "309" are the basic size/dimension number. Any suffixes or prefixes mean snap rings, seals, shields etc. The basic number will be the same for all manufactures because they are standardized but the suffixes will vary in meaning. The information is readily available on each Mfg. website. In this case the "W" means a maximum complement type with higher load capacity and has filling slots for when they put the thing together. Some use an "M" to mean this. The "G" means it has a groove for an external snap ring. A 208KG would get you the snap ring groove but with a standard complement of roller. SKF, for example, would put a "6" in front of the number for the standard bearing: 208k (timken) = 6208 (skf).

For the main shaft the big bearing by the pinion is a 311W. The pilot bearing usually comes in two pieces and the last one I bought I used a Bower M5205E which had the rollers and the outer race. The inner race was an MA5205. The pilot bearing is a roller bearing and the suffixes are different than the ball bearings. The base size is the same though, 5205. There are some selling double row ball bearings that will fit there and are cheaper. We put one in an M once and it was still doing fine when dad sold it two years later. I prefer to use the roller though. Buy one from the IH dealer and you get both halves in one box (a Bower/BCA box) but the last time I did that I had to part with a $100 dollar bill.

SKF has an excellent website btw and has a great tool where you can put in bearing dimensions and it finds part numbers.

Stick with good brand names: Timken (Fafnir), SKF (MRC), NTN (Bower), Koyo, and Nachi.
