(T/A is Torque Amplifier)
Here’s how I get the starter off
1) Turn steering wheel to the left to get clearance
2) Remove the 3 bolts (I don’t have an easy way to get that back one out)
3) Remove the metal strap that covers the brushes on the starter
4) Remove the pin in the clevis attached to the top T/A lever (it’s the one right under the starter).
5) Use a ratchet strap to hold the T/A handle all the way back
Twist the starter to get the starter‘s brush opening resting on the lever the clevis was attached to. From there move the starter around to slide it out. You may have to remove the solenoid if it’s in the way.
You probably should use good electrical tape over the brush access slots before you put the strap back over that opening

I am assuming yours is the same as mine, and you don't have the clearance to back the starter out
because it comes up against the hydraulic line behind it. My question is why don't you just back
the fitting on the hydraulic return line out and move it out of the way? I only takes a couple of
minutes even if you have to remove the battery side cover. As far as the inside bolt on the starter
ears, get or make yourself a curved handle box end wrench. It's not a miracle cure but it helps a
lot.

To move that hose I have to remove that bracket at the bottom of the reservoir so I would drain the hydraulics. My battery is behind the seat so we must have a different configuration.

Oops didn't have my brain engaged. I meant the cover over the hydraulic valves. My battery is also
behind the seat. The principle idea however remains the same, remove the side cover and back out
the fitting. I have done that many times, more than I care to remember. My starter has a habit of
locking up that I have never found a solution for.

After considering what you stated I am still puzzled. I am not sure what bracket you are referring to. What mine has is 1 large fitting attached to a flexible 1 inch + [I haven't measured it], hose. It's a return hose and and as long as the engine isn't running there is almost no fluid loss. I simply back the fitting out and move the hose aside. That give me enough clearance to back the starter out and remove it.
