my other cub, the 58, has a woods 42 inch slung under it, the slip clutch wont engage, somebody has had problems with it before it seems, once i got it apart, i cleaned it and very lightly lubed it, [ just wiped a little corn-head grease on with a finger], i dressed the damaged ratchet piece with the hex center, but it looks well used, have the same problem, i found a new one on messicks site, it that the only place for parts for this old model? hopefully thats all i need, i can weld it in 1 piece as a last resort but id rather not

Hi:
I also have a 1958 cub (mine is a LO-BOY) with 42 inch Woods belly mower. I had trouble with the clutch ratchet teeth being so worn that it would rattle and slip when it was under load. I dressed the teeth so they would engage better, but still slipped. Then I noticed the bushings were worn that support the upper ratchet part. The drive belt was pulling the upper ratchet part so it was not sitting level and the ratchet teeth were constantly moving against one another, a little like a planetary gear set!
I bought a pair of bushings from my local Woods dealer in Jackson, TN. Also, I figured out that more spring pressure in the ratchet assembly might help prevent teeth climbing out of mesh, so I ordered the spring. My over-running clutch now has TWO springs in the ratchet and works great. Good luck; Woods stuff looks antique but is worth fixing!
