Farmall H not starting

I can now get a backfire through the carb air intake if I shut the gas off and hit the starter a couple times. Then white smoke comes out Thur
exhaust and then I can't get anything else until I turn the gas back on.. turn it over awhile... then turn gas off and I'll get another backfire. Does
this mean anything in particular to anyone?

1342 from the front to the back. #1 on the cap is (usually) in the 1:30 position looking from the back. then clockwise 3,4,2.
The points are set at .020" on the point of the distributor cam. Jim

Paint can change ground and connection conductivity. If you took some electrical components off, start with their connections and grounding through paint. Jim

Mag or distributor ? I'm only familiar with he distributor ignition, but start with the basics. Is there power at the points with the switch on ? Do the points close and ground out the ignition ? Spark at the coil ? Spark at the plugs ? Spark when you set the timing ? After that, bad coil, condensor, rotor, cap...

It is probably something straight forward.

It's a mag. Have good spark at plugs. When done cranking gas pours out the air intake that I took off. I figured that's normal when it doesn't take off and the excess gas comes back out. I'm going to try to time it this Wednesday when I get time but how would I have screwed the timing up if I didn't take mag off?

Gas shouldn't run out of the intake tube. It is flooded. Is your choke stuck shut or the float sunk or jammed ?
