504 Repower

Will a gas engine from a row crop 460 bolt up to a row crop 504 transmission? I found a 504 in decent shape but the engine froze up and busted. Too good to scrap out. I have heard both are considered narrow frame tractors. If not, is there any other swaps that would not be too in depth (labor intense) besides a 300 or 350 engine?

Block is the same as a 340, 240, C super c in 504. I don't think a 300 or 350 will fit. I had one(504) and the oil pump is the same as the 240 that we had. I could be wrong but the S H 300, 350 were the same generation.

No, the engine in an IH 205 combine is a C221 6-cylinder, the same as in the IH 460 tractor. But I believe an IH 93 combine has a C135 and the IH 203 combine has the C153. One of the changes when IH went from the 203 combine to the 205 was to put in the larger C221 6-cylinder engine. I had an IH 93 and still have an IH 205 combine. Al

I have looked at this question many times and I concluded one of the best transplants is to put a C175 or C 200 engine in it. The 544 has the correct adapter plate to fit either of them in and there is room up front for the C 175 or C200. These engines were also used in gas powered 275 and 375 windrowers and are plentiful where these windrowers were used. I think there were a few other applications. Since they fit well in the 544 engine compartment and since the 544 compartment is similar to the 504's, I think it would be a nice way to get 50 PTO HP out of it. I have seen a conversion using the same block as a C221 and it is a lot more work having to lengthen the frame rails, hood and fit everything else in there for about the same power.

460 engine should bolt to housing. Not sure if the 504 frame rails will clear everything on the 460 engine. 504 do go on the outside of the housing but don't know the difference in width between the frame rails on both. 504 rails should be long enough but don't know about the 504 radiator working. Someone will know what modifications would be needed and amount of work needed. 153 combine engines can be installed in a C size tractor with little modification, the 153 or diesel in a 504 has a different block than the C size.

the engine out of a 105 combine is same size as a 504 tractor....not sure if a bolt up fit though,...have both never measured.

Thanks for the input. Now to do a little engine shopping. It may be easier and cheaper to shop for a block and maybe pistons for the busted engine. Sure would be nice to swap in a 6 cylinder though. I always liked how those engines sound. Maybe have to find a 6 cylinder for the next project.

The answer to your question is yes a 460 engine will bolt into a 504 bellhousing. however you will also need the two 460 frame rails as the 504 is not long enough.
A C-153 out of a combine WILL NOT bolt into a 504. The 504 C153 has an angular shape block in the rear and the C153 in a combine has the round style shape on the back of the block.
The 460 engine in a 504 is still a challenge as the steering shafts need to be lengthened, the hoods are different lengths. Also there are two holes one on each side of the 460 frame rails that need to be drilled and tapped.
Here are some pics of a 504 that Ive put a 460 (C221) into and still have a ways to go.
