Farmall H help!! Electrical problems I think

So I repainted my Farmall H and now it won't even try to start. Pretty it's all out back together correct but I replaced the wire on the generator that goes to two points on the generator and it seemed to fry. This was connected for maybe 2 seconds and disconnected when I saw smoke. So what could I have screwed up? Also, when I took it apart it's still a 6V system and it was negative ground. How do I make sure that's not my problem?

First the system is pos gnd. The wire that has 6v on it goes to the reg post labeled BATT othere wire goes to Field you mite have fried the reg as they dont like wrong polarity you also need to polarize the gen withwire from batt term to the A term on the gen after you get the batt grounded to Pos

If the smoke was not the only problem with starting, I would start checking battery and starter connections. Ground cables don't like paint very much. If the tractor won't roll over but it did before I would start there. Always check the simple cheap thing first.

The generator is connected to the regulator, depending on year it was made (or previous modifications made to it by prior owners)
or the light switch. There should be two wires going to the generator, which should be positive ground from the factory, but can
be made to work either way. One of these wires is pretty big #10 wire and it connects from the "A"terminal on the gen to the
cutout relay Arm terminal (which looks like a regulator but is really a device that connects the gen to charge and disconnects it
when stopped). From the cutout Bat terminal, a different fat wire goes to amp gauge on the side toward the charge direction of the
gauge. The other smaller wire should be connected to the "F" terminal on the gen, and lead to the light switch resistor for charge
control (4 position light switch). If it has a true regulator it should have that fat wire hooked up the same to the Arm terminal
of the regulator, and then go to the Amp meter. The small wire on the F terminal goes to the Field terminal on the regulator. I
have included a link to the diagrams. There is also a set of rocedures for diagnosis from John T called John T charging system.

Let's take a step back. HOW doesn't it "even try to start?"

Does the engine not crank over at all?
Will the engine crank over with the starter, just not fire?

If the engine does not crank over at all, then you need to check all your battery connections. Make sure there is bare shiny metal where the starter contacts the tractor frame, and where the ground cable contacts the tractor frame.

If the engine cranks over but does not fire, first thing to do is check for spark.

One thing I have heard is if you paint the spark plugs, that ruins them. I have nothing to prove that, just something someone told me on more than one occasion. So if your plugs got painted, try putting new ones in.

Oh, and did you turn the fuel on?

Yes! If you painted the spark plugs, replace them.

The engine will crank but won't fire at all. There is new plugs in it already. There looks to be a spark when I took plug 1 out and cranked, not much of one but there was spark. Figured I wouldn't see much in a 6V anyway. Fuel is on and I tried to use some starter fluid direct into carb through air intake thinking it must be a fuel problem if I had spark but that didn't work so I'm back to square one and am so confused. So now back to maybe ignition problem? I have lots of pictures but don't know how to post them on here.

The spark plug wires should not be painted either, nor should the distributor cap.

Okay so the tractor has spark but still won't even sputter. I've tried a little gas in cylinders and starting fluid through air intake in carb but nothing. What am I missing here?
