On the front of Red Power there is a 560 with front wheel assist -- did the front wheel assist work in all the gears ? someone told me once
it only worked in second gear because of where it got its power from only matched second gear --- any truth to that?

I don't know for sure that it worked ONLY in second gear, but I do know that that front wheel assist did NOT work in all gears.

Some things I can't remember very good anymore. But if I remember correct the Elwood ones were driven from the 4th and 5th sliding gear. 1,2,3 and reverse could be used. Front axle gear box was driven from the 4th slider and 1 through 3 would turn the transmission top shaft different speeds. But if the front and rear was set up to turn the same speed with the Elwood gearbox the 4th slider on the top shaft would still drive front and rear equal speeds in 1 through 3. 4th and 5th slider needs to stay in neutral unless front is disengaged.

Yeah, I think you're right because the Elwood drove off the 4th/5th slider in the neutral position, then the splined top/output shaft including the neutral positioned 4th-5th slider was driven by the selected 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear slider when one of those gears was engaged..and reverse too, except I don't remember if it was the 1st gear or 2nd gear slider that drove the reverse idler, but I think the Elwood drove in reverse too, but not in 4th or 5th because the Elwood drive ( 4th-5th slider didn't engage the Elwood drive gear then if 4th or 5th gear was engaged...forward for 5th and back for 4th.....Elwood in the middle). I'm stopping here to go get a haircut and before I get more confused.......
