Farmall B Fixing Updates

After getting new head gasket installed on a B, I just wanted to thank everybody for their answers to my questions and worries. Your knowledge was great reassurance.

The next thing I am wanting to work on is the throttle response. I really only have response on the upper half of the throttle. I have never worked on a governor before. I have read a lot in the archives about linkage adjustment and input shaft slop. I went to adjust the gov to carb linkage, but found it was already good to go. I looked at the input shaft next and noticed about 3/16" movement back and forth. What size of hole should I bore (I have a drill press), and what size and length of bushing should I use to correct that slop? Any other tips on getting better throttle response? Thank you!

It is pretty normal to have 1/3 of the stroke of the hand lever do nothing. It seems wrong but is the case. The gof to carb link should have imperceptible slop. Make a new rod and bushings in the levers to reduce it. Bushings to make it work can be found at A good hardware store. Or McMasters Carr. Jim

I guess you could do it with a drill press but line up the hole with a 1/2 drill in the chuck then clamp the gov fast so it cannot move then use a 5/8 bit on the hole .You can get the bushings at Lowes ect standard bushing 1/2x5/8 you will need to trim the length after you press it in as you want that input lever to fit as tight as possible so it cannot wobble. Check if the thrust bearing is OK also the spring on the end of the shaft has good tension and can move free that holds the gove assy tight to the block. Ive rebult a bunch of them so they work like new again. I do the hole with my milling machine and have a 5/8 cutter thats couple thous undersize after been sharpened so the bushing fits tight in the gov housing.

I drill then ream to 5/8. I have an assortment of starter bushings & found the one that works. Not sure what starter it is used on. If you drill it to 5/8 , it may be too loose.
