B414 starter

Did the B414 diesels have a lever 6 o 8 inches long on the lower left side of the dash to engage the starter? I have a gas B414 but it starts with the key. Was looking at a diesel tractor today that is supposed to be a B414. It had the lever to start. Looks like factory setup.

B275 had the lever, maybe early 414's too?

Hi Phil, B414D had a lever on bottom left of dash to starter as starter had no solenoid switch. 434D had the key switch start.
A B414D that was a crate tractor that was assembled in Louisville, KY may have a Delco starter with a key switch start.

Thanks for the replies. This tractor don't look too bad, I may go back after the snow is gone and it warms up here and go check it out better. I got looking in my B414 parts book and found that there is listed a lever start version of starting system.

Early B275s with the BD144 engine have a metal lever that engages an electric switch on a Lucas starter. Later B275s have a Lucas starter with its own built-in switch and do not use that lever. Any B414 with the BD154 engine that I have seen also has the Lucas with the built-in switch as part of the starter (what some are calling a solenoid.

I knew a guy with a diesel B414. I'm pretty sure it started with that handle. I am in Canada so the tractor would have had a Lucas starter.

i am ivor from UK and I worked at the local main IH dealer from 1976 until 1980 and I remember most had lever to start engines but the very last of B414 and B275 had key start the only B414 with key start that I remember was owned by the local council and was used for grass cutting in summer and the only B275 with key start was owned by a hill farmer and I can remember going to recover it with the lorry driver after it had run away down a hill and the front axle had broke off
