Ring end gap

I need to know the piston ring end gap I thought I read it somewhere but forgot whereI thought it is 0.020.If you read my other post about low compression and NO compression in # 2 cylinder tThe piston are all good had the machine shop change all the valves, springs, guides, seats, stem seals everything on the head. just waiting for rings piston bearings and gaskets to come. Thanks Howard

A general rule of thumb for end gap if you have no spec to go by is .003 for every inch of cylinder bore.

Example 4 inch bore end gap should be no less than .012

Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian, I think the bore is 3 and one eighth so the end gap should be no more than 9 thousands
right.

My old man was a machinist for 30+ years and his quick rule was no more than 4 thousandths max per 1 inch of cylinder bore

No compression would make me think the cam is not timed right or valves set really wrong.

I really doubt it would be ring gap issue.

David, the no compression issue is from really bad valves that are paper thin and the whole head was rebuilt. the piston and sleeves all checked out very good. I need the end gap because I thought since it is all tore down I would put rings and bearings in it.
Thanks
Howard

Not sure if I'm preaching to the choir here, but if you are putting in bearings, have you measured the crank journals? Make sure that you measure rod journals at about 30 deg and 120 deg (angle, not temp) to see if they are out of round, preferably with micrometers (far more accurate than calipers). If no more than a thou under in any direction, new bearings will be ok. If not, to avoid accelerated wear and eventual failure, have the crank ground and properly sized "undersize" bearings installed.

Stock specs for crank journals are:
mains: 2.124-2.125
Rods: 1.749-1.750
bearing clearances: .0009-.0039 (and yes, those are the right numbers)

Well worn,The machinist came to my house after I dropped the head off. He Measured the cylinders with a dial indicator and the crank journals with a mic. He said checked out well within the tolerances. He feels that I should see a notable difference after I get it back together that I may need to install a seat belt.
Thanks

Thanks Kent, that is what I thought but I still think I will measure to see if it is within specs. and if it is won't waste my time measuring all of them.Thanks.
