I am baffled by this thing! It was ON the tractor when I got it, but I did not remove it. It has "fins" on it like an alternator would, has a "12 volt" sticker on the side, but WILL NOT LINE UP with the fan pulley! I THINK the thing is a 12v genny, but not sure, there was no battery in it. It DID have a Ford solenoid wired into the mix, though.

Modify the bracket so the pulley lines up, or add some spacers between the genny bracket and the tractor mounting bracket.

It must have a battery to be safe and avoid letting the smoke out of parts. It is surely an alternator and if connected to wiring it can put out as much as 100 volts if not Feeding a battery. We can help with this and it will work. Please don't run it untill we get more info and a picture. Ask Kim (the site moderator in Feedback Forum) to allow pictures. Resize it to 900kb. Jim

I figured on making a new bracket, but I have now idea as to wiring it. I believe it is a 12v Generator - like one from a 504 (or similar tractor). When I say there was no battery - the cables were there, but no battery! I have never seen an H wired with a solenoid, though.....

That is the original type generator. I assumed the "fins" were on the body not the pulley. It needs a voltage regulator to work.
The diagrams linked will be perfect. Look up John T charging system for diagnostics. Jim

be nice to know what tractor you are referring to ???that is the original generator for the 60 series tractors and early 06 models. dont know what your trying to install it on. and no it wont line up on a letter series tractor, without modifications.

Might want to check the generator mounting bracket as upside down looks correct to many. Also, the original generator had a longer armature to accept the adjustable pulley used.

Genny and tranny, two of my pet peeves. They are generators and transmissions. Old guys get to have these peeves.

I've gotten repaired generators back from the shop with the "fan" added on them - theory is it helps keep the unit cooler. In each time I had to take it off to get the pulleys to line up. Maybe you need to take it off or maybe someone has tried to put on the wrong generator.

I think this was an attempt to switch to 12 volts. The adjustable pulley is gone. In order for it to line up with the fan pulley, the fins on the Gen pulley are about 1/2" from the radiator frame. As I recall, the thing was just hanging from the bracket when I got the tractor....

Now....if the coil and regulator are 12v, everything should work....

I am planning on new bulbs, switch and ammeter, anyhow....
