Our newly acquired FARMALL 400 sn IS 39391 S. I believe that would indicate that is a 1956 with TA is that correct? The bore is 4.125 with the step head or fire crater pistons so someone has replaced the sleeves and pistons is that correct? I posted earlier about the burnt valve just trying to find out what we have. Thanks for all your help.

According to Tractordata.com, the 400 had 4" pistons. The 450 had 4.125" (4 1/8"). Ordinarily, they shipped with 'flat tops', but the "high altitude" option would have had the Firecrater / step head pistons. If it was stock with the HiAlt option, it would be 4" firecraters.

So yes, someone has been in there and given it the "Kirk Treatment" ("Scotty, I need more power").

The 39391 dates it to 10,000 or so into the 56 production year. The S is for Torque Amplifier and provision for independent Power Takeoff. The pistons have probably been replaced. Jim
