Super M 1st gear bad bearing noise

Bought this old gal a couple years back and seldom use her. 2nd gear has missing teeth and would shift into reverse without a grind most times. Almost always 1st would grind before would engage. No noise in 3rd or reverse but sounds almost like a throw out bearing trying to lock up when in 1st gear.

I am assuming it will have to be split to rebuild the transmission or did they provide a way to rebuild without splitting it? I am a shade tree mechanic with a welder. I have no idea as yet how I will accomplish the split either. All will have to be done outside as well.

I think with the belly pump out, and the top off it can be repaired. Counter shaft and main shaft do come out. Jim

That is music to my ears as I was dreading having to split her. Mine has an external pump that runs off the cam gear. Already had a round with that as the gear split on me.

Depending on the damage caused, you might consider finding another rear. But it would be a toss up because odds are such a rear end wouldn't be with a running tractor.
Especially if you have all kinds of damaged gears.

(quoted from post at 04:15:50 02/24/17) I'll say that I would prefer to repair the one you have. Take the top off and drain the oil, look around.

Found a manual on Ebay with updates. Got it on order and will do some studying up before I go too far. Rain tomorrow here so don't want to pop the top quite yet as will be out in the weather. Need to get a big tarp so won't fill it with water and dirt first thing.

Final got the top off and pulled bolts on pinion end that holds the bearing. Pulled it back as far as I could. Dropped the belly pump and took those bolts loose to pull the gears back as far as it would go. The pilot stub lacks about 1/2" of clearing the gear. It appears someone has been inside the tranny before as there is the remains of an outer bearing race. The shaft is ground down to around 3/8 diameter and about an inch long. It appears to me that I may have to split it at least by a half inch or so to clear.
