806 injection pump

can anyone tell me why my 806 diesel starts and runs good for a few min. and then dies? Thanks for your help. I got this tractor not running, the governor weight retainer had a shredded connector so I made it solid.

I took out the check valve but it does the same thing. Could my fuel be too dry? It is farm diesel, the pump seems to seize.

Run it again and loosen the two screw timing cover on the side, if it keeps running with the fuel housing leaking the return side is probably plugged with the coffee ground like retainer bits. If this is the case the pump should be repaired soon, before the retainer pins shear off, seizing the rotor and breaking the drive shaft. If it still dies you have fuel supply trouble to the pump.

The pump will only seize once and something will twist off. Normally the shaft will twist off at the reduced diameter portion but it could take a key out of gear drive or even gear teeth. Just loosen that side cover like others have suggested to see if it will continue to run.

If the check valve/housing pressure regulating valve is OK/not clogged as you say, ANY restriction between there and the tank will have the same effect... clogged, damaged, squashed fuel return line will cause what you are seeing.

Are you saying you welded the weight retainer pieces together or got a new updated weight retainer?
Is it shutting off like its running out of fuel, spit & sputter till it dies or like someone pulled the stop, all at once??
Is fuel coming out of the top of the pump once you took the connector out??
I've seen them so packed w/ crud, the return hole is clogged.. just take a screwdriver and poke the crud till fuel flows out the top..
Check the tank screens, change the fuel filters.. the inj. pump has a screen filter under the inlet also..
Good luck.

So what do you mean by "I took the check valve out?" Because I know if you watch net videos on the problems with these pumps some tell you to knock the check ball out and reinstall the fitting. We are trying to tell you that you need to see if it will continue to run fine with the housing bleeding off to the the open such as the timing window cover being loose or the check valve out. (the reason for my first question) Because if you just knocked out the check ball and reconnected the return line it still may be plugged somewhere before the tank, thus same short run symptom. I am also on the same page as "the pump guy" wanting to know what you mean by "made it solid" in regards to the governor weight retaining ring?

OK, update. I sent an update last night but it didn't go. It now runs great. The return line was plugged. To answer the question about the retainer, I brazed it together in the middle so the mark would be in time. It's murphy's law. I'm sure you all have had to go over things again and again, to fix a problem. Originally the retainer was ground up, so I cleaned everything out, had every thing apart, even blew out the return line. Thank everyone for you ideas and support, I just needed your help. I really didn't want to tear down that pump again cause I am very allergic to Diesel on my skin.
