D-179 connecting rods

I'm putting the D-179 motor back together in
my 464 and I've run into a problem. The I&T
manual I have says to put the side of the
rods with numbers stamped on them towards
the camshaft side of the motor. I'm about 90
percent sure this is opposite the way I took
it apart. For one the notches that hold the
bearing in place are opposite from the
syltamped numbers and I think the notches
were on the camshaft side. Secondly the
stamped numbers don't reference which
cylinder the rods go to. The first rod is
stamped 246 on both rod and cap and the
third one is stamped 544. Other motors I've
done had dots corresponding to cylinder
number or exact number stamped on them.
So does anyone have knowledge of or a
different manual that tells how to install
the rods in reference to the bearing notch
or the flat side on the wrist pin end of the
rod rather than stamped numbers?
Thanks

Who knows what went on before you got in there... I always verify the rods are marked before disassembly, and note the positions of the rods and marks.

If the engine wasn't torn down for an obvious failure in that area I wouldn't hesitate to put it back the way it was.

ASSUMING the rods are straight and true the only way it would matter is is it's a splash oiling system (NOT) or the big end of the rod is offset from the little end.

The notch/tang thing isn't a big deal, as one tang keeps the bearing from moving while the engine is running, the other if it bounces backward at shut down. No matter which side the tangs are on, one will retard reverse rotation of the bearing, the other forward rotation.

Take a look at the small end of the rod. If it has a flat boss machined on side of pin hole that flat goes toward camshaft. That is all the IH service manual I have says about it. The other numbers on the rod cap and rods are matching manufacturing code numbers and have no relation as to what cylinder they go in.
