Super h carb float

I am rebuilding my carb on my super h. The directions say distance from body of carb to farthest point on float should be 1 and 5/16. That
seems like at that measurement there isn't much movement in the float. If I am measuring from the right spot,my old measurement was around
1and3/4. I guess my question is is that the right measurement and am I measuring from the right spot. Any help would be appreciated Thanks

With the float and needle and seat installed and the carb top turned upside down and flat to the world, measure upward from the mating surface of the carb top, to the highest point on the float. It usually looks pretty level at that setting. The tab on the float that pushes the needle upward should do that task cleanly and not let the needle get crooked. The float must not drop so far inside the bowl that it touches the bowl at any point. If it does it will stick there and flood. Jim

I've found that setting the float so the fuel level is 1/8" lower than the book says keeps the carb from running over. Engine still runs normal.

When I worked for an Allis Chalmers dealer we worked on all makes and the rule for float height was as you say; turn the body upside down and hold to light. If the float is level with the top of the carburetor the float height is acceptable.
