H starter questions

the old H I have is a 44 model would not start the other day boosted it nothing so I let it sit ( been too cold to work on it outside no inside storage) so today a little warmer and more snow coming tonight I took starter off when it was off I got the booster cables and tried the starter and it turned over but the question is the drive spun out to the ring gear contact position then it did not come back is it supposed to or when it starts is that supposed spin it back in. not sure why it would not turn the other day I even tried direct on starter and all I got was sparks no turning. any help would be great.

It depends on the starter drive. If it has a big spring with flat looking coils, it is the old style, and should retract. if it is the newer style it has a much smaller spring and if sticky might not retract but will when the tractor starts. The drive pinion was probably stuck (jammed) in the ring gear. A common event that makes that symptom. A new style drive usually fixes that. Jim

clean the drive and lube with a PTFE (teflon) based dry lube. Put it in. If it works, great. if it fails again, it may have an internal short to ground. Jim

I took it off and hooked up the booster cables to the starter and it will spin but when I bolt it back on tractor all I get is sparks and no spin so could that be internal short.
