Farmall 560 crankshaft pulley

I'm replacing my crankshaft pulley. I tapped it on till it only needs to go 1/4 to 1/2 inch more. I put the nut on to press it on the rest of the way and I stripped the threads. Are you not suppose to do that? If not then what is the proper way? Any assistance is appreciated.

I use a grade 5 threaded rod that will allow me to screw it all the way in, then I use a heavy nut and thick washer to pull it on. Warming it hurts nothing (if painted, a hair drier, if bare propane. Never get it above just too hot to feel, to save that seal. Jim

On my diesel I warmed the pulley up a bit in the toaster oven I use for bearings, then used a heavy 3/4 socket with a bar to drive it on until it stopped. Then put on the washer and nut.

thanks for the info. Next question. Since I stripped the original nut out. Can I get any nut to replace or do I need to get an original? The original is different looking with a nut against the pulley turning into a end of a screw at the outside. weird description but that is the best I can describe it. Not sure why it is that way?
