Farmall 400?

A customer of mine bought a pretty cool F400 LP tractor. Asked me to R&R the radiator as he thought it was leaking. Well? It ain't the radiator leaking...it's leaking out the front of the water pump pulley. Has a screw adjustable sheave and some sort-of mechanism on the front of the pulley.

I understand the screw adjustment...but what is the rest of the stuff on the front of the water pump..some sort-of weird thermostatic drive??

The springs pins and driver turn the water pump shaft and keep it against the seal. The fan runs on different bearings. It
is not hard to rebuild with a modest press. Jim

Pump has packing behind the slotted piece shaft passes through that drives the impeller. It has right hand threads. If it's not screwed all the way in. Put two pumps of a hand grease gun in the lower fitting on pump and try tightening the packing nut just enough to stop the leak. Wouldn't hurt to put a couple pumps in the other grease fitting. Top one is for hub bearings and bottom for the impeller shaft. To much grease pumping will force grease into cooling system. If packing is shot the driver on front of impeller shaft is removed by removing the nut and driving the tapered pin out. Then unscrew packing nut and add packing or dig old packing out and renew. Just depends on condition of old packing.

Thanks guys..I had checked with the local CaseIH house...and nothing available through them. However I have a new/reman pump coming sometime or other this week.

I was just curious about the drive system on the old Farmall.

I had never even heard of a Farmall 400 before! Reminds me of my father's old 560 LP in many ways.

This particular tractor must've been a tricycle style originally and now it has like a 'Schafer or Scheffler' aftermarket wide front axel conversion on it.
