Any Farmall 340 fans out there?

Would like to hear the good, the bad , and the ugly about this model. Tell me your experiences, likes or dislikes, etc... Thanks!

My neighbor, now retired, owned a couple of Hs, a couple of Ms, a 340 row-crop, and a 766. He used the 766 for heavy tillage work, and the 340 did everything else. Pulled the planter, mowed hay, etc. The 340 was his favorite tractor, and he still has it. The 766 went to the auction.

Seating arrangement is not good, you sit way too low. Throttle control is not particularly good, too many pieces and friction disc too exposed to weather. Tin work is too complex. Reverse is unbelievably slow. Difficult to get on and off for fat old men.

You have to define which 340 you are discussing, the utility or the Farmall, to really talk about
the good points and bad points. Differences in brake arrangement and steering have quite an
impact. I have a 340 Utility that my father bought used in 1965. Gasser that has had the engine
overhauled twice, and has out lasted every other tractor on the farm. Mine has the Fast Hitch and
a bucket loader, thankfully with power steering. Steering has been overhauled once. Very tough
and handy tractor that has not had an easy life. Used primarily for the bucket and the fast hitch
which I do have a few implements for. Primarily a large homemade snowplow. The plow is very
useful because of the down pressure on the fast hitch allows you to really get down and scrape
the snow where a conventional blade is inclined to float. As I said it has outlasted all the
other tractors on the place, [that's quite a few], because its so handy, BUT it has never been
anybody's favorite tractor. The seat is limited for positioning and the pedal angle makes it a
very tiring tractor to operate. On the Utility tractors the pedals are pushed down more that
forward and combined with the poorish brakes and loader weight it really tires you out. I
understand the Farmall model with its deck gives you a more forward push pedal angle and I
believe the Farmalls used a 1 in. bigger brake disc. But like I said it has outlasted everything
else.

The farmall is my favorite and will work a H to death and
get real close to a M , just falls short. The wheel base
is short like the C , which I find makes it nimble in a
tight spot , has fast hitch now for the bad , it doesn't
have enough weight up front , short on lugging power , but
very strong for what it is, and the pedals and seat are
both less than desirable.
