Guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and part out the old 656 Hydro next summer. The hydro leaks bad and slips when she gets hot so it's almost useless in the summer except as a loader on level ground. Too bad, the rest of the tractor is in good shape. I've found a 86 hydro advertised nearby that looks pretty decent in the pictures and am thinking of taking a look at it. It has a 2350 loader and 3 pt. on it and is priced at $9750. Assuming the hydros in good shape what do you guys think of the price? It only has a snow bucket, no grab fork. Can the grab fork and bucket from my old F21 be modified to fit that loader?

$8,000 at Herrs Machine in Washington KS will have your 656 transmission in better than new condition.

Jim, is that just the trannie rebuild or does that include removing and replacing it? Labor up here in North Dakota would run me $3-$4000 and last time I checked the rebuilt trannie would be $5000+. Even with the rebuilt trannie the tractor would only be worth about $4-5000 with a loader on it.

That's the full rebuild, you send your removed transmission there.
Raleigh has developed some fixes for the niggling problems that can haunt a hydro such as the breaking spiders in the charge pump, worn servo attachment holes, worn case where the servo anchor pin fits, bulletproofed input shaft etc.

The transmission is dynoed and pressures checked and adjusted before shipping back to you. You have the option of an exchange unit, you keep your serial number tag, or having your transmission repaired and sent back to you. (longer turnaround time)

If the tractor is in otherwise good condition and has a useful purpose you shouldn't look at resale value but the value of having the machine at work for you.

Yes, and the fact that after dropping $10,000 on that hydro 86, you could very well end up in the same boat 10 hours after it's backed off the trailer in your driveway.

It doesn't take much of a shop to get the center section out of the tractor.

Thanks for your input Jim. Unfortunately I don't have the tools or skills to pull the trannie myself so I would end up with way over $10,000 in the tractor by the time it was done. I just use it to push a little snow in the winter and put out a few bales for my horses which means about 50 hours a year. Don't think I can justify putting that much into the tractor. I'll keep your information handy though in case I can find someone who would do the labor for a more reasonable price.
