1086 shift ing problem

A friend called last night, suddenly 1086 won't shift into 1st.

Shifts from 2 - 3 - 4 and back to 2 are normal.

What could be blocking the shift into "1"?

Well on them it could be a number of things , Cab mounts settle and sorta screw up the linkage and cause it to bind or bump into other things , Could be that a roller down under the speed transmission cover broke and not allowing the cam to move it into 1st , something may have fallen down into the shifter area up in the cab . SOOoooooooo your going to have to go on a fishing trip , pull the floor plate up and start looking at the linkage and check for movement of the shifter rod and see if it is moving all the way , check the shifter arm on top of the speed transmission to see if it is loose or the linkage is somehow messed up there , check the little ball sockets and if everything is good there then you will have to pull the cover and look it over in there . If you have never been in the top of one of them then before you start twisten nuts and bolt FIRST get at least and I T manual , then look up the parts book on the speed transmission to know what is SUPPOSE to be there and what might be missing . Oh and have fun , you'll love it .

Thanks for the comments, I am not a stranger to IH transmissions (although I am much more familiar with the GREEN ones).

It's internal, never have seen this issue before with an IH, the GREEN ones will act like that when the synchros wear and get out of place, but, obviously, there's no synchros in that setup.
