Farmall M seat mount

I have two 51 M's that have the same style seat - they have the mid mount Monroe shock. On one tractor there are 3 tapped holes on each side of the mounting bracket. On the other tractor there are only 2. The tractor with 3 allows me to adjust for a little more space behind the steering wheel. I was wondering what y'all thought about this difference?

This the bracket that bolts to transmission cover? Only noticed 5 holes in each side of mid shock mount seats I have had. Beats me, looks like IH used the same part number for mid shock seat base without advancing the suffix from 48 or 49 through end of M production and beyond.

The seat bracket has 5 holes. The transmission cover has only two tapped holes on each side. The M with 3 tapped holes on either side has the 9 speed gears so I was wondering if it may have been drilled and tapped when the cover was off.

Some transmission tops around 41 and 42 only had one hole on each side for seat mount. would need to check for serial number break. Never noticed more that two on rest on a side through SM. Don't know if you have a top with something different or drilled and tapped later. Regular tops have extra casting under the bolt holes so they are blind holes.

I agree on the casting boss reinforcement. Drilling and tapping into the top where there is no boss might be weak, and might allow chips of cast iron into the housing. Extending the front of a different (or other ) seat base with a brace might be safest. Jim

Looked at a top cover casting I have off of a stage 2 SM. Casting number 357141R3, it has the 2 mounting holes a side but does have 4 places the casting protrudes on underside for 4 holes a side. IH may of had another application for the covers and maybe some came with extra drilled and tapped holes. Don't have a M off to look. 357141R1 was used on some late M tractors but your model would probably have the 4 numbers and two letters following. 357141R3 was also used on SMTA tractors. M&W 9 speeds didn't have any change to original cover. Can't help you with a good answer why.

Yes that does help! The M with 2 holes does not have a casting number. It has a date code of 2-6-U which corresponds to a1951. Looking closer at the other M, after digging some dirt out, it appears to have 4 drilled and tapped holes for seat mounting not the 3 I had stated. It does have a casting number, 357141R3 with a date code 7-7-Y which corresponds to a 1953. So maybe this one has had some parts changed around over the years. If only these tractors could talk!

Lots of M transmission covers had the casting number sunk in casting instead of raised. Some not very deep and hard to see and some can't be made out after years of wear or rust. About the time a fellow thinks he knows a good bit about these old tractors something different like you have turns up.
