cub lo boy crankshaft pulley

Alright I am working on an offset cub lo boy. I have been going through fixing oil leaks. Well I got to the front of the engine and have been stumped by the crankshaft
pulley. I didn't follow the book and use the special tool and so of course I broke part of the pulley edge off. So does anyone have any tricks or do I need to find this
special tool or make one? And if anyone has a good used one for sale that would be awesome too. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thanks

Those things are miserable to get off. I took my 47 Cub engine to a machine shop for valves and they needed to remove everything from the block so I told them they could remove the crankshaft pulley as I know I would have a major problem with it. They were still cursing that thing when I picked up the engine and they have all the tools for the job.

You can get brand new ones for about $25 from most any place that sells reproduction IH parts.

It's a tight press fit. The only way to get it off without heating is with a special puller that incorporates a 12 ton hydraulic jack. Even then you sometimes break them getting them off.

I used a bearing splitter and a large gear puller, but I had to heat the pulley with a torch. Not red hot, just put some tension on with the puller then heated evenly until I heard a "pop" and saw movement. Of course that ruins the seal but you're replacing the seal anyway so who cares?

I made my own puller to get the pulley off the crank shaft. A couple of pieces of 5/8 or 3/4 inch steel plate, a drill press a high speed hole saw, some 3/4 inch all thread, a 3/4 inch thread tap and an angle grinder are what you need to do it. I used a jack screw system instead of the hydraulic Jack. Pulley came off with no problem. This has been 4 or 5 years ago, but I think I still have the puller and could post a photo if anyone is interested.

To remove that pulley ya need a ten ton Puller set like i have and a BIg earing splitter . I can tell you this OTC has no sense of humor on the price of that puller set .

I know its not your fault as the search tool here leaves much to be desired. I know I have answered this question a number of times with pictures. But I cant even find a post I know is there. How would anyone else.

Regardless, Google search helps big time. Here are some pics of what you need. Easy just to make it.
