I have a 1954 Farmall 300 Row crop, ive installed a Behlen Power steering unit on it. Everything installed well, tried the system out and only time i got power steering was when i moved one of the hydro levers at the same time. Had a friend tell me that the plug i installed int the replaced 1st hydro valve was in backwards so i re installed it facing the tower , this time, that installed i tried a start up now i have NO hydraulics at all. I was also told it might be the replacemant hydro diverter on the front of the pedestal. Im now at loss for a next move, I have the manuals for this installation but they are vague . Im at the end of my rope ANY help would be greatly appreciated

I think you need the correct IH part. I'm pretty sure you'll need the regulator, safety and flow control valve to run power steering off of the factory hydraulic. If you only have a regulator safety valve it won't work. Go to a Case/IH parts site to see the difference. Your easiest option may be to run a dedicated power steering pump on a belt from the front of the engine.

Make sure you have that plug in the correct hole. I know, lot of work getting to it again. Your original problem that gave you power steering by activating a hydraulic lever is normally due to a worn, internally leaking flow divider valve. That is the spool behind the plug on the outside end of the new regulator block assembly you had to install. A few years ago , that spool was available yet, problem is , the inside of valve bore wears also so now spool doesn't always cure the problem.

Pete and Tom , I do have the needed parts, the power steering diverter , i switched out and the 1st hydro valve with the J tube. I have all the needed parts . Pete with what you said the divider valve , not to insult , but how sure you are of that , the guy i bought the parts off of has one i can switch out , that was my next move.BUT i do want to make darned sure of where that plug is first , does anyone have a picture or know for sure where that plug goes and in what direction???
thanks Keith

The plug is right above the outlet hose to power steering. Right on the side of block. Has a small protruding center and you may well have to push plug in a tad to get the snap ring out. I am sure you will see erosion on the land of the flow divider spool. Putting one in from a different valve may or may not help though like I said, body often wears also but worth a try. It was a common problem ever since those systems were more than three or four years old. First years that spool was not a serviceable part so you can well imagine, not many block assemblies got replaced when they worked less than perfect. Some one may have even installed spool backwards or taken spool out completely, never know.
