IH 1953 TD6 w/ 247.7 Cid

I have a guy with a IH 1953 TD6 247.7 ( 4.1L ) motor that he has trashed the motor ( Let water fill engine thru exhaust ) then let some so-called diesel mech pull the head and leave off, exposing the block for 15 yrs to our rains and freezing here in the NW corner of Oregon. My question is what other engines can I swap into this unit ? I have seen a few conversations of perkins motors being installed, but none said which perkins engine used. Who elses engines will fit into this puppy ? MAssey ? Cat ? Cummings ? Etc. Appreciate any info actual conversions. Thanks & Cheers

get another engine from a farmall MD or WD6 tractor is the easiest. unless your bound for the transplant.

Not bound or actually desire to convert, know of any good motors you suggest ? As I'm not seeing any except those pretty much in the same shape. Been working on old tractors & crawlers for over 40 yrs and it seems every time someone claims " in Good Shape " I have found that Not to be the case. In my opinion I would have called them " Poor Shape ".

I would be looking for a motor that has been running, not one that was running when parked 10 yrs ago. Thanks for your help and any suggestions where one might be found. Appreciate your input.

Anything out of a Farmall M or McCormick 6-series tractor (i.e. W6, WD6, I6, ID6, O6, OS6) will fit without modification.

If you want to look at other brands, you're on your own figuring out how to bolt it in there. Once you determine that the engine will fit inside the tub, if you've got a big enough Bridgeport to hog out an adapter plate and machine the flywheel, anything's possible.

The gas-start diesels are kind of rare, parts are hard to find, and expensive. The most practical thing to do is make it a gas job, but then it will be of limited usefulness, more so than it would be with a diesel.

In my opinion, not worth the trouble to try fitting another brand diesel in there. You'll end up investing much more than the machine is worth. It would have to be a labor of love.

Easiest swap would be from another TD6 or a UD6 power unit - if you can locate one.

Now if a gas replacement acceptable, an engine from a T6 crawler or U6 power unit would be pretty much a "drop-in" replacement - again if you can locate one. A bit more complicated would be an engine from an Farmall M or it's descendants (SM/400/450) or an IHC W6/400/450. But all are certainly doable.

For a non-IHC engine I've seen a couple nice conversions of Farmall M's with the Cummins 4BT. Adapting one into a TD6 would be considerably more complex than the above. But when finished you'd have a crawler with a reliable and easily maintained engine.

I gather by the first sentence that the tractor does not belong to you. Unless he agrees to pay you by the hour, I would just forget the whole project. If it's been sitting 15 years, and if the plugs are missing from the bevel gear housing, the steering clutches will be fused together with mouse pee, assuming they were serviceable to begin with. I don't know for sure, but you could probably find one that runs for maybe 2500-3000 $. Barnyard is right. It's a labor of love. Ask one whose heart is bigger than his brain.

It doesn't really seem clear if its yours or if its a customers, but Im leaning on it being a customers unit.
For the amount of money he/she would be paying you to get it going again, that person could buy two or three running crawlers.

If its your unit or the customer is hell bent on getting that one going, the only option to me would be to convert it to a gas powered unit from obtaining a drop in 248 motor. I would think it wouldn't take much work to put in a C-248 or better yet, a C-264 sleeved out to 281ci from a M.

The best option would be to find a gas start diesel 248 motor that's ready to drop in. But I suspect you will be waiting and searching a long time before you will come across one.

Thanks Guys, been searching all day for a replacement. If anyone has a replacement from any of the suggested ones please let me know. If anyone knows of a line to any of the suggested replacements please give me a holler as I keep coming up against a brick wall. And yes it's for a customer. I'm a guy that put a GM Gen 6 454/470 Hp Alum Heads into a 2nd Gen Firebird after two shops decided it could not be done. My neighbor needed help and I stepped up and after making custom motor mounts ( None were made off the shelf ) and squeezing this monster into the 81 firebird ( original motor was the First Production Turbo charged in the U.S. 301T ) After doing a couple of other things to the motor ( Which is carb'd ) used an 800 Cfm & a few other things incl Super Modified Full Length Headers ( Went thru 5 Sets before finding ones that would fit without modding them or the Frame has over 575 Hp & well over 550 Ft/Lbs Torque, No Nitrous. Found it to be the only one in North America on the Every Major Forum for Z28's, Camaro's or any Firebird Forums, So that is a First ! But I am only trying to salvage this man's Dozer, so any leads would be greatly appreciated. Even looked @ Auctions. I am telling him that he can find a used Dozer that size or larger Antique for less than going thru his unit. Thanks Again & God Bless, It does not have to be a 248 anything up to the 282 would work also.
