I prefer the metal one but that is because I have also gotten away with reusing them. Some people prefer the others. Either way I always use copper coat or aluminum paint on the head and block. Last metal gasket I used was used and it is on my BA but I did take special steps to be able to make it work

I have used both and never had issues with either. If price is an issue get the regular one because reusing head gaskets isn't the smartest idea since they are designed for single use only. I take pride in my work and a leaking head just to save a buck isn't worth it to me.

id use the lower one , looks like fel-pro to me , the metal one is good to but ive had them seep water when sitting in the cold days of winter ( not when in use ) , also if you have your head or block surfaced make sure ( if you use a metal gasket) the shop dont make the surface to smooth, they will really leak then,( have that problem w/ my JD B ) them old style gaskets need a little ruffness to seal where as the fel-pro gasket wont care

i do prefer the metal one, as it is a better gasket. these gaskets require a clean smooth finish as with any gasket. fresh maching the best. they should have a sealant used on them. the composite gasket does not require a sealant, as it is built into the gasket. this gasket would be a better sealing gasket. as with any gasket proper torqueing plays a big roll.
so for the backyard mechanic the composite gasket would most likely be the better choice is my thinking. also use brake kleen on the surfaces to get rid of any oil film. you want clean clean clean.
