Farmall Front Steering Wedge Plates

Right now in eBay there are two steering wedged plates, that tilt the front end slightly to aid steering. I have heard both versions of which was to install them, I don't know. I have no interest in this, just letting you know. Look under Farmall NOS.

My Super H has a bolster wedge - the "poor man's power steering". The word FRONT is cast prominently into the thin edge of the plate.

I have read about these wedges before and can not understand how they would help with the thin edge to the front. I would put the thick edge to the front to give it a slight caster effect. This is my only logic.

I-H moved the pedestal back from factory for better steering so why would you move it forward. We put one on the M and it did make the steering esier but i do not remember which way the wedge went that was in 51 OR SO.

The wedge reduces the caster for easier steering, The NF has caster built in.

Caster is for stability, not ease of steering. The more rearward caster you have the more the steering has a tendency to "self center." Like a shopping cart wheel.

That tendency to self center will be fighting against you as you try to steer, making it HARDER to steer the tractor.

That's why you want the narrow edge of the wedge to the front.

Suppose you have a H. IH changed the lower bolsters on SH tractors or just before to have less caster than previous bolsters. Cast number on bolsters end in a DD suffix. Don't know what effect the wedge has on steering of those.
