? for the Farmall experts. Is there a difference in the hardness or the kind of steel that was used to build the gears in mid to late 40ies and a MTA or 400?

Starting in the mid-1930s and over time, IH gradually applied induction hardening to more and more parts. Without knowing specifics, it is possible your mid-1940s gears are not treated that way and your mid-1950s gears are. What prompts this question?

All i remember hearing was the 1256, final drive gears, were harder than the 1206 gears. And the 1456 bull gears were wider, and their were more teeth on the ring and pinion on the 1456 .

One of the TALKING points on the introduction of the 1206 was that all gears were hardened with a different process than the 806. Not being a metallurgist , I forget if it was case hardened, induction hardened or what but I do know they were making a big spiel about it. One reason was all other mfg's were calling the 12 just an 806 with a turbo added. Mostly Green advertisements.
