W4 Serial Number / Value

Found a 1951 W4. Has NICE rear tires, good fronts, and it broke lifters / push rods. He claims compression was at 135 on all 4 before it happened. He seems pretty knowledgable to me, said that it broke, and they just have no need or want for it. Price is $500, but it is 9 hours away ( on the way to Casey though.... wink) Has a home made loader on it that is very ugly.

Anyways, what I want to know, is the serial is WBH29764 W1. What is the "W1" part of that? I haven't heard that before?

I can see that it has a mag drive hydraulic pump, so that is a big plus for me. What do you guys think it is worth?

what he wants is fair. i believe the hyd's were added later. curious how lifters just broke and if that is indead the problem. have never ever heard of a lifter breaking. but have seen some pretty worn ones.

Well, a guy has to wonder right??

He told me straight up, "I was yanking on a stuck truck as hard as she would, dumping the clutch, abusing it really, and it just made a bunch of noise and died."

Said it broke nearly all the lifters, and bent or broke all the push rods. I have another H engine sitting here, but it is stuck. Should have the parts I need to get that one fixed though...

Assume the engine is toast. Unless he took it all apart, he has no idea what happened. Sounds more like a rod and crank. I have seen many broken engines. the only one that took out the valve train was a modified engine that lost the timing gears and crached all but 4 valves out of 16. That engine can't crash valves. Even with a junk engine you aren't out anything at that price. How much does it cost to rebuild an H engine? 1000?

Engine driven hydraulics were available on 4 series tractors before farmalls so it may be original. Should be worth the money with tires. Don't see how all the lifters could break. If rusted in bores the timing gears would give before they broke if getting enough traction to turn engine when pulling or baring. Engine set around and valves stuck or camshaft and crankshaft got out of time due to a failure for the bent push rods. If lifters don't have the stop plate on block it may have kicked some up out of bores and look like broke from above through push rod hole.
