I have a farmall 856 that wont move the gear will grind a little when you shift it into gear and when you let out the clutch it just rocks a inch. It had done this but after running for 10 minutes it would start working and then be fine for the rest of the day then the next time you started it up you had to wait again. once it started working the clutch and ta didn't slip either. Now it wont start working anymore. I also replaced the pump on the side of the tractor and that had no effect does anyone know of some possible causes of this problem thanks

Does the pto work? If it does splines good
on pressure plate. Do the remotes work?
Have you had a set of gauges on it? With a
good sprag clutch in TA and good main clutch
you do not need any hydraulic pressure to
move in low-TA. Might not have power
steering, brakes, or any hydraulics.

If MCV pressure is low, and the sprag clutch in the TA is failing, Which can be a symptom of the no move when cold, it will not move. Does the Power Steering work, Does the hydraulics make a difference in the engine sound if the lever is moved with nothing attached to the remotes. (dead headed)? Jim

Well like the rest have said , and i will add one more thing DOES YOUR OIL LITE WORK ?? THE OIL TEL TAIL LIGHT not only showes engine oil pressure it also is hooked to the MCV oil pressure switch and when you turn on the key switch you should have two red lites showing on both sides of the temp fuel gauge cluster one is oil and one is alt. IF it still works if it ids still on once the tractor is start3d it will tell you that you either have no engine oil pressure or no pressure on the MCV . Yea i know a stupid idea . Now a lot of times guys install and engine oil pressure gauge either because they want to know that the engine has oil pressure and can see that and they do not worry about the MCV as long as the tractor moves. So lets do the basic here change the hyd Filter and install a new filter gskt. , What does the hyd. fluid look like is it milky , if so then change it . Is the hyd. system full to the mark ?? if yes add five more gallon to it and see if that helps. If not then you have a problem as it could be a blowen O/Ring in the MCV or your MCV pump is total toast. Or does your PTO work and hitch go up and down If yes then it is back to the MCV , if no then you have a problem with the clutch pressure plate and the IDPTO input shaft. Also you T/A is OUT and you need to dig into your piggy bank and spend some bucks . If you have to put a T/A in then if you want the job done correctly and have not done one before then either get help by someone that knows what he is doing because it is not a simple matter of turning nuts and bolts .

Thanks for the replies. The pto works but the steering doesn't and I think the light you mentioned isn't working anymore. I had someone tell me today that the ta could have oil leaking causing no pressure does that sound like a possibility and if so how could you know for sure and then how could it be fixed. Also I did change the filter and fill it full of hytran. It did one time when it was still working free wheel going down a hill thanks

You do have MCV pressure issues. A major hemorrhage in the TA clutch, or other issues may be in play. The Hytan should be 5 gallons over full. If just full, problems with the issues mentioned by the Vet will happen quite often. A very common (near universal) practice is to over fill the big frame tractors. It is cheap to try that first. Jim

Well IF you had the fluid level at the full mark and you went into free wheel going down hill then you do have a suction leak on the suction pick up Now is it the O/Ring or is it a crack in the suction pick up tube , Here i can not say as to find out you will need to pull the rock shaft housing to see if you have a crack in the pick up tube as sometimes they will crack at the weld on the mounting bracket and when you go down a steep enough hill like we have over here sometimes your in for a fun ride . Your now working with a OLD tractor and god only knows how that tractor has been treated over the years and what has been done to it and by who . . Ya want to make it like new then the only way to do this is to strip her down to the running gears of a Katty Did and inspect replace, repair, Rebuild every inch of it . and if i was to do it and do it it would take me three to four weeks .

On my 886 I get some weird things with the hydraulics sometimes. I either hooked to a dirty implement or the hytran is full. Fill it five gallons
over, change the filter and report back. I can tell on mine when I start it if it is getting near the full mark. It will work at the full mark, but she's just
happier if over full.
