Anyone ever purchased new rod bolts from ARP for the 221, 236, 263, 282, 291, or 301 six cylinder rods? Afraid to buy new bolts that may or may not come from china..

I realize that you are probably a lot more knowledgeable about these tractors but in my over 50 years of working on tractors and other engines I have never replaced rod or head bolts unless I broke or damaged one. My question is do you think it is really necessary.?

Also in reference to bolts from China a few years back it was found that some aircraft bolts were being made in China and used by Aircraft Mechanics who were unaware of the fakes. Don't know how it was discovered or if there were any problems with them. By the way aircraft bolts are even a better grade than grade 8. I'm thinking around 125,000 psi breaking strength.

I do, because metal doesn't break all at once , i am sure you have broken a spindle, it's hard to believe how little was holding.

Hi Richard, the biggest thing to replace is the head bolts on D236,282,301 with Cat bolts #9S1374 for long ones and #1D4574 for short ones. Murphys Motor Service (573-696-3655) has an ARP head bolt set as well, you could call them and ask about rod bolts. I don't have anything in my notes about the rod bolts. Is this on your tractor ride 560? I can call you later this week about it as I want to talk to you about a pump job anyways. I believe I have your number saved in my phone.

Brad

Yes, for the 560 tour use tractor. Not using a head gasket on this engine, making changes to the block like the MF Super 90. Five seven four eight three five 3292 in case you lost the number. Thanks, Rich

Your working on a Farmall not a Cheve and do you have the PLACE BOLT OR THE PATCH BOLT?? . The only time i have ever replaced any rod bolt or head bolt is if i see any damage to the fastener . The biggest thing here is chasing the threads and on the blocks to run a bottoming tap ALL THE WAY to the bottom . And if you do your part at the Wrench on the job correctly it will more then likely out last you , as those blots were made when things were made to last .

I use new rod and head bolts every time. If you don't you are gambling. As for ARP I would not be afraid. They have good products and most race car engines use there fasteners without issue. Also get a jar of there bolt lube. I started using it several years ago and won't torque a bolt without it. I have overhauled several newer Deere engines that have most fasteners torque-to-yield and this stuff works!! No more chattering when getting to the final torque.

Yup, know all about the PITCH bolt, holds tension by shank stretch, and PLACE bolt, holds tension by bending the bolt head. Since these bolts have some age on them, I'd feel better when they are replaced. Seen a few blocks of all makes with extra vent holes at times, better hardware would be a good idea..
