Heat Wave = '47 M update

Hello all!

Well, I hope your new year is off to a great start... Since we finally got above zero here in MN yesterday and today, I figured it would be a prime time to work outside and get the '47 M back together. The new (refurbished) cylinder head has been sitting in the garage for a month or so, and I have been dying to get some seat time on one of my tractors (three of the four are down for service work). After getting everything together and adjusted, this M sure does run like a top! It's got real good power with the 4" bore and stepped head aluminum pistons. I managed to make a couple passes with the loader in about 8" of snow. I can't wait to really spend some seat time on it! Enclosed are a couple pictures, and there will be a video to follow (but due to a camera malfunction it was cut a little short).

I hope you enjoy, and I hope all are doing well!

Looking good Ken, too bad about the head. I have a farmall 300 with a loader that I use to clean my driveway. But here in central Iowa we haven't had any snow yet. It won't break my heart if it sits in the shed all winter.

After all you have been through with this M I am glad you are getting to use it! I have a M with a heat houser and loader with snow bucket and it does all my snow removal. Have fun with yours!

Yes, this M has proven to be quite stubborn - but the trials have only made my abilities that much more diverse. I think a lot of us had some firsts in seeing this tractor torn down multiple times now. Next on the list for this is to get a couple pairs of wheel weights, and I'd like to consider adding live hydraulics & reservoir from a Super M... We will see what happens!

Sounds like a good machine to use, Weldor. I'm just happy to have this thing back together and running good. We haven't had much snow here in the twin cities either. Seems to either be just far enough north, or just far enough south. I'm waiting for that inevitable 12-18" snow storm to come rolling through.

This tractor sure does have a bark! I forgot to bring the muffler with me yesterday, so I am sure the neighbors were awake when I hopped into the seat!

Yes, finally! When they are running on only three cylinders, they don't feel nearly as capable. I can already tell that this M will be VERY useful. I can't wait to plow some good snow with it!

I think you would want to upgrade the cam gear before putting on a live hyd pump from a super M. I believe it would work without doing that but would be prone to breaking.

If you're going to go as far as changing out the cam gears, you also need to change out the front engine plate to one from a 1951 or newer M, Super M, 400, or 450. The IH live pump only lines up on one mounting hole on the older engine plate. I guess you can modify something to make it work but I'm not sure how strong it is once that's been done. I'd rather have both mounting holes line up properly, but that's just me.

Yes, I remember reading about the cam gear being a weak point, as well as the front adapter plate needing modification/replacement. I'll just chalk it up as "things I should have done the first time"... It's really not all that bad plowing snow with this tractor. Just takes some getting used to and some fast hands!
