RE: denglish/Mark Robke Steering Worm

I called Augusta Farm Supply on the 13th and talked to Greg about a new SA steering wheel shaft/worm. He was doubtful about having any but he is still looking. He was fairly sure they had some for the 140. Would a worm for a 140 work in a 1948 SA? I have the impression at some point in time, the number of teeth on the worm and worm gear were changed.

I looked at the CaseIH parts store and the part number for the steering shaft for SA and 140 are the same 351820R92.

Mark's comment about new ones was exciting news and I'm hoping Augusta Farm Supply comes through. I've been leery of the used ones on eBay. The worm on my SA is functional, it isn't chipped or cracked, but there's no telling if those on eBay are any less worn than it is. I don't know where my idea about the tooth count of the gears changing over time came from.

I have used the online auction to find steering wheels for three different tractors. All were fine. FYI the SC and 200 wheels are a little too big around for an SA.

I work there part time. They are an old IH dealer,a Southern States dealer, and a Bushhog dealer. They have LOTS of old NOS IH parts.I looked it up,and a 140 is different from a 130.I don't know which shafts he has,but there are at least 4.This area has lots of the offset tractors still in use since this tobacco country, and Greg has lots of cultivator parts, too.Mark

I have a good used one. I parted out a Super A back in the summer and have all of the steering box parts and other related parts. I can assure you that if it is the worm gear piece that it typically doesn't wear to the point of being noticable. The part that wears is the keyed part of the vertical shaft in the box. If you need the long shaft for the steering wheel with the worm gear on the end, then I have several of those too. Those are different for a 140.
