On transmission top shaft there is a gear that has a pin holding it in place is it ok to use a cotter pin what do u guy used

Remember, a cotter key is soft and not as strong as a pin. If you are referring to the slinger gear it should not make any difference though unless you get some water in your oil and it freezes.

john is right about the slinger gear. It is aluminum and needs to be secure as they have failed and caused issues. I would use a roll pin so as to make it very "located" Jim

The oil slinger is on the lower shaft and should freely turn on a bushing. I believe it is "pot metal" (zinc-based, die cast), not aluminum.

The only gear in the transmission with a retaining pin is the reverse spline gear. It is splined to the shaft so all the pin needs to do is keep it from sliding out of line. The book actually calls out a 3/16 x 2-1/4 round head rivet. You should be able to use a roll pin if you prefer.

you must be talking about the reverse gear on the short shaft don't see why a cotter pin wouldn't hold that shaft in place
