Splitting stands

I want to make up some splitting stands. I think that will make it easier for me to do what has to be done on my 42 B. Thinking about using box tubing. What wall thickness do you folks think I should use?

Box tubing in 1.5X 3 inch section with 1/4 inch wall section is plenty strong. If you bolt through it, you need to put spacers
inside to prevent collapse. Welding a plate to the outside to bolt to is also OK. Jim

I put 8" steel casters on the bottom to aid in rolling apart. Some kind of hieght adjustment is needed, some folks have side wind
implement tounge jacks for that. You will need to also make it adjustable from side to side.

Found these on another site. This is along the lines I was thinking. Just wondering if 1/8" wall is thick enough or use 1/4" wall .

I have never likes splitting stand and that is why I have 4 chain hoists and 3 one trolleys that way I can hang each part up and then move them away and back together real easy. I have an I beam that runs from the front to the back of my shop around 15 foot high so easy to split a tractor. I built my BA that way

Wish my garage was big enough to be set up like that.

Best I could find was 3/16" thick. Guy a metal Shop asked what I was making, told him and that it weighs about 2200 lbs. He said no problem holding it up.

This is my only tractor. Not planing on any more. Yard is not big enough. I am already the (can you belive that guy) talk of the neighborhood. With as many folks watching me unload it, you would have thought I was handing out free beer.

The stands are in what we call compression that means the wt is pushing down so theres no danger of the 11ga failing

Most any shop can be set up with some sort of over head crain system even if it is on floor trolleys. Or one A frame set ups. Did a job last summer on an IH656 and had to add 7.5 foot the the I-Beam to split that big thing

I would not be concerned with crushing the stands, rather with having them twist or tip to the side.

Here is a splitting stand that I designed for the CUB, A, B, & C series of tractors. It bolts to the oil pan rail of the engine with or without the oil pan in place.

I was planning on 60" wide base and braces.

I like those. Have a friend with an American that needs to do some transmission work. He would benefit from the way it bolts up.

How much is your insurance deductible or disability?

I always ask my self this before I get into these projects. For those of you who think I am dark or depressed, it;s quite the
opposite. If something goes wrong, what will be my costs to my health. Thinking this way usually keep me from using a Boxelder
tree branch to use a chain fall to split a tractor.

Other things to consider is how much help will you have. If you are doing it yourself or with someone who has no knowledge of
mechanics, then you will have to over build the splitter. If the Goodwrench mechanic who lives down the street is going to help
you, you might be able to get away with alot of things.

And then how long will it be split. Less than a day, you can make it easier. A week, month, etc. you need a better system so
that it doesn't get upset and fall.

Good Luck. You can always build a good unit and then sell it when you are done.

Not that much.
I have to do things by myself 99% of the time. The only person I would trust to help me stays pretty busy, that is one reason I want to make the stands. If it has to stay up for more than a week I will use 6x6 and my large jack stand to support it.
