Scuffed the distributor drive bushing

Just finishing up the rebuild on my '47 and and noticed a scuff on the bushing for the distributor drive.

Figured I would just clean it up before I reinstalled the governor/drive so I grabbed some wd-40 and crocus cloth and I went and made it worse.

What ever the material is in that bushing it's super soft, softer then anything I've ever worked with before. That was just a light test touch.

There's no oil pressure there, it's just drip lubed and I can't imagine there's any load there either, think I should just run it?

I would replace it but CIH want's $75.00 bucks for it! The one that's in there was new, when I bough the bear block it was missing. God I wish I knew when to let things be....

I would like to add I can feel the scratches but my finger nail doesn't hang up on anything.

The machining on the governor/drive isn't exactly polished either...

Crocus cloth is red iron oxide based fine powder almost exclusively 1200 to 3000 grit size. Those scratches were made with
what looks like 230 grit silicon carbide. I think you can buff it out with a plain muslin cloth and smooth dowel rod, It is
soft, and you have not ruined it. Put assembly lube on it when putting it together. Jim

No, it's Crocus Cloth. You made me go down and double check, J Weight Crocus.

I've used it to polish journals before, I've used to to touch up aluminum, I've never had it do anything like this before. Either I got a dirty piece of cloth or that busing is coated in butter.

Good idea on the muslin though, I'll give that a go, I just so happen to have quite a bit of it around.

As long as the gear doesent have side play lube it and go. Only possible effect would be the timing gear and the mag gear mite be a bit noisy due to gears being a little tight i wouldnt worry about the finish theres no pressure or heavy static load. Quit worrying

I didn't remove that much material, before I scuffed it up it almost felt to tight. Now it feels better, just looks terrible.
