Project for mill

All the thermostat and bypass talk has got me thinking that I will make a SS bypass block plate for my H when I get mill automated.

I would think an 1/8 hole bypass hole would be more than adequate.

I would. The operating temp at 180 to 190 degrees is important for reduced oil dilution from condensation, good fuel vaporization, and combustion efficiency/reduced HC emissions. If the Super C uses a T-stat in the hose, a substitute can be found that fits and has only a small bleed orifice. Jim

Where is the gravitational top on a flat plate?

That stumped me Dr. Jim.

I did plan to bore clear through the gravitational top to the gravitational bottom.

I am proud to stump yoy. (not drastically). The top I mean is the highest spot on the bypass opening that the hole can be placed. Looked at when the stainless is in the housing. (I can't remember if it is flat to gravity (level) or plumb (vertical) when installed. The reason is to keep from trapping a pocket of air when bleeding the coolant on fillup. It will have to be pretty thin. Too think and the top of the housing will sit higher. Its not too big of a deal, but it could be a problem. I am pretty sure someone here did that, used 1/8 thick SS, and drill the hole 1/4"

I would put it in where the thermostat housing gasket is now.

I think 1/8 is way too thick, would go with gauge thickness.

Maybe it was 18 gauge where I got the "1 & 8" from. I do recall it though, but dont have time to spend searching through the archives to find. I do remember hm saying he tried several different thicknesses before he got it to work. Maybe even had to do some machining on the housing, I really dont recall, other than he done it.

16 gauge or 18 gauge stainless is fine. To machine it, sandwich it between two aluminum plates, 1/4 inch each. Two bolts through the big opening, or the actual bolt holes, or a combination will hold the sandwich together. Jim
