I the engine on my H torn down a bit and want to check to make sure the timing gears are set correctly. How should the timing gears be set?

Thanks.

if it is in running order , they are set correctly. there is dots on the gears that mesh with each other. you need a manual to follow the sequence. if there is excesive backlash then the gears are worn.
not following if u actually removed some gears or not?

I don"t have the IT Manual, but do have the IH manual, it just says line up with corresponding marks. So do the two dots line up with the two dots, and one dot to one dot?

it all depends on the dots and teeth. it may have one dot going inbetween two dots on the opposite tooth. or one dot to one dot on the opposite tooth depends how the teeth line up. i dont have a manual at the moment to give the actual position. should be able to tell by eyeing things up and make sure marks are straight across from each other.

"Timing: Drive gear keyed to camshaft; one tooth of gear marked to mate between similar marked teeth on magneto gear and cam gear has two teeth marked to straddle similar marked tooth on crankshaft gear at the same time when the engine is on No, 1 TDC." From manual (different YT post) Jim

apz*jr,

I'm going to throw out [another] suggestion in picking up the IT Shop Manual. It really is a great resource, and covers many models. Enclosed is a photo of the section regarding H/W4 timing gear setup process. I've also included a photo of my "M" timing gears which may be similar (but refer to the manual description for proper procedure).

Hope this helps.

That was one of the things I prided myself in throughout college - I loved to pick out the editing errors in the textbooks. Made me feel smarter than the smartest for a minute! :)

I agree, don't always follow the pictures that are listed in the manuals. From what I have read, the description I posted from the manual is correct. And in my manual, they do not include a picture of the H/M series timing marks - only the descriptions.
