Farmall CUB 60 piston rings follow-up

I have a dilemma. My bore measures within standard spec, but my piston ring(new standard in size) gap does not. The gap is measuring too large. If I am not able to purchase a 0.010 over, will a 0.020 oversized ring set work with standard sized pistons ?

Assuming you are referring to the ring end gaps, you could order those for a somewhat larger bore and then File the ends to get the proper gap..BUT..remember, the Bores may well be Tapered and are smaller toward the bottom of the Cylinder..

IF you mean the ring has too much side clearance, you may need to get some ring spacers or have the ring grooves machined wider and use a wider piston ring, or 2 narrower rings together or use a spacer to narrow it back to size..

Well ya want my two cents worth here if the std . rings have to wide of end gap then you have a bore problem and you need to bore the block to the next size and install the over bore pistons , as playing the game with fitting rings is a bandaid at best and you will end up with a oil burner . Since i am not there putting the mic.'s to it and the bore gauge myself i have no idead what you are working with . you did not state your piston to wall clearance . And today myself i would never go back to the cast iron pistons on a Cubby and i would make other upgrades and make it a SUPER CUB .

I don't know if you got the rings with the sleeve kit, or if you even replaced the sleeves. But I have purchased and installed overhaul kits for many tractors ( tisco kits from this website) that had ring gaps which were over the spec right out of the box. Some were .005-.010 over. Nothing I could do to decrease the gap. In fact I don't think I have ever had to file any down because they were too tight.

Not a single problem in any of those tractors now. I've been plowing with them, tractor parading with them, and all sorts of other things on the farm.

If you are only re-ringing it and the gap in the new rings are just unacceptable, I would contact the manufacturer and ask for a replacement. If the rings you got were made for your bore, yet you have old sleeves in, then the gap in the new rings ( which may be too large even with new sleeves) would definitely be over the spec. But I would bet that the gap would be less than the old rings you took out.

Keep in mind that the rings will expand with heat, but the ring gap spec may be what compensates for that.

My piston to bore clearance is measuring 0.002. I can provide bore measurements, just not right now. I measured North, South and diagonal and calculated an average bore size. Stay tuned and thank you.

No sleeves on a CUB is right....

Top of Bore, approx. 1" down measurements: North-south=2.636 East-West=2.631 & diagonal=2.627...an average bore size of 2.631.

Std bore calls for 2.625-2.627. I am 0.004 over the max of 2.627..

What to do..?

That's right, they don't..... ; )

Then like he said, overbore rings would be the only solution other than boring the block and installing a sleeve.

I'll just stick to my own MD problems! haha

The "right" thing to do is bore the cylinders .020 over and get oversized pistons and rings.

Frankly your cylinders are pretty egg-shaped if you ask me. .009 doesn't sound like a lot but it's nearly half the overbore dimension. New rings won't seal well no matter what you do.

Question just how many hrs a week and what are you going to use under heavy load. You can hone the walls to bust the glaze use the rings you have ad it will probably last you for as long as needed. The only way to have a complete new engine is bore and get oversize pistons and that will be expensive then grind the crank with new bearings and end up with a 1000 invested so just how perfect does it need to be.New valves and seats would also be required to make it 100% new your money

Others are correct, it is time and effort worth it, at this point, to put .010 oversize pistons in it. Reality cannot fix that egg shape. Jim
